인사말은 정확하고 자연스럽게 할 수 있어야 한다. 서양인들은 별로 대수롭지 않은 것이라 해도 고맙다거나 하는 감정의 표현이 몸에 밴 기본 예절일 뿐만 아니라 그 표현도 다양하다. 대수롭지 않은 것이니 해도 그만, 안해도 그만이라는 태도는 절대 금물이다. 특히 다음과 같은 표현들을 익혀두어 상황에 따라 자연스럽게 쓸 수 있도록 많은 연습을 하기 바란다.
♣ 상대방의 호의와 본인의 실수에 대하여
- Thank you very much (대단히 감사합니다)
- How nice of you to say so! (그렇게 말씀하시니 참 고맙습니다)
- Excuse me. I am sorry (실례했습니다, 죄송합니다)
- A thousand pardons for... (...해서 정말 죄송합니다)
♣ 상대방의 감사에 대한 응답
- You are (quite) welcome. (천만의 말씀입니다.)
- Don't mention it. (천만에요, 원 별말씀을)
- Not at all (뭘요)
- It's nothing at all (뭐 아무것도 안닌걸요)
♣ 대답은 정중하게
질문에 대한 대답은 Yes/No 만으로 너무 간단하게 끝내는 것보다 Yes, I do 또는 No, I don't와 같이 하는 것이 바람직하다. What would you do, if ~ ? (만일 ~인 경우에는 어떻게 하시겠습니까?)로 물을 때의 대답은 'I would ~'로 시작해야 한다.
♣ 대답은 구체적으로
미국 어린이들에게 '너희 아버지는 부자니, 가난하니?' 하고 물어보면 그 대답은 상당히 구체적이다. 즉, 'My father gets $250 a week (주급 250달러) 또는 'My father makes(earns) $ 15,000 a year (연봉 1500달러) 등과 같이 대답한다. 그러한 환경에서 자라고 그런말에 익숙한 미국인들에게는 무엇이든지 구체적으로 표현해 주지 않으면 애매한 느낌을 갖게 되기 마련이다.
♣ 개인적인 신변을 묻는 질문
질문보다 너무 간단하게 대답하면 면접관이 당황한다. 기본내용에 살을 붙인다.
- May I have your name, please?
- Where were you born?
- Where is your family from?
- What is your present address?
- How many are there in your family?
- Please tell me about your family.
- Tell me a little bit about yourself, please.

♣ 질문을 알아듣지 못했을 때
영어로 면접을 받다보면 질문을 제대로 알아듣지 못해서 당황할 때가 있다. 이럴때 다시한번 말해 달라고 부탁할 때는 Beg your pardon, sir라고 말하면 된다. 면접이 상당히 진행되었을때에 한 두마디의 말을 알아듣지 못했다면 Pardon, sir. 이라고만 해도 좋다. 물론 어느경우에나 말끝을 올려야 한다. 또 잘못 들었으면 그 즉시 다시 물어야 한다. 생각하는 척 하다가 What? 이라든가 What did you say?하고 천연득스럽게 물어보면 면접관에 불쾌한 인상을 주게 된다. 단어나 발음을 알아듣지 못했거나 문장이 어려워 질문의 내용을 정확히 이해하지 못했을 때는..

♣ 대답하기 어려운 질문을 받았을 때
대답하기 어려운 질문을 받게 되면 누구나 머뭇거리게 되는 게 보통이다. 그러나 답변을 준비하는 동안 질문을 한 면접위원에 대해 전혀 반응을 나타내지 않는다면 면접위원은 대답하고 싶지 않은것으로 판단해 버리고 다른 질문을 진행할지도 모른다. 그러므로 대답을 하겠다는 의도를 어떠한 형태로든 명확리 해야 할 필요가 있다. 이를 위한 테크닉을 2∼3개정도 소개해 본다.
우선 잠자코 있지 말고 'er' 이라고 하면서 대답할 말을 찾고 있음을 보여야 한다. 그러나 우리식의 '에'라든가, 이 사이로 '스'하고 숨을 들이 끈 버릇은 좋지 않다. 둘째 완전한 sentence를 만들려는 생각에 간격을 너무 두어서는 안된다. 적어도 sentence의 첫부분 정도는 말하고 난 후 간격을 두어야 상대방은 대답이 끝날때 까지 기다려 줄 것이다. 즉,
Q) What would you recommend in this situation?
A) I would recommenf that the matter should be reconsidered.
또 한가지는 위의 두가지 방법을 결합하는 것이다. 즉 적당한 부분에서 끊어, 'er'하고 소리를 그사이 사이에 넣어가면서 이야기 하는 것이다. 이 방법은 외국인이 너무 빠른 속도로 이야기를 해 잘 알아 듣지 못할 때 이야기 속도를 늦추는 방법으로 쓰인다.
♣ 상대방의 말에 맞장구를 칠때
미국 사람들은 대화할 때, 상대방의 말에 대해서, Um hm이라고 맞장구를 치는 버릇이 있다. 이것은 우리말의 '아...네', '그렇지요' 같은 것으로서 대화를 부드럽게 연결시켜 주는 역할을 한다.
'That's just right' (그렇구 말구요)
'I think so' 등의 표현을 써도 좋고, 이밖에
'I understand, Is that so (right)? 등도 같은 표현이다.
이와같은 표현들은 남발하는 것은 좋지 낳으나, 적절할 때에 사용하는 것이 대화의 분위기상 좋은 효과를 줄 수 있다. 일반적으로 사용되는 맞장구의 표현으로서 상대방이 말한 문장의 주어오 동사만을 받아 말하는 방법도 있다.
♣ 취미나 기호에 대한 질문
누구나 대답할 수 있는 지루한 취미는 될 수 있으면 피하고 개성있는 취미 한 두 가지만 대답하자.

- How do you spend your leisure time?
- What type of books have you read recently?
- What kind of hobbies do you have?
- What's your favorite sports?

♣ 학창시절에 대한 질문
여러 단어가 결합한 한국말을 직역하여 영어로 영작하지 마라. 일반명사나 비슷한 뜻의 다른 단어를 대체해서 대답하는 것이 좋다.
- When you were a student, was there anything you got really seriously involved in?
- Were you involved in any club activities at you university?
- Why did you major in Korea literature and language?
♣ 특기사항에 대한 질문
구체적인 스킬이나 능력을 자세하게 서술하는 것이 좋다.
- Do you have any special skills?
- Do you have any licenses or other special qualifications?
- Can you use computer?
♣ 경력에 대한 질문
지난 직장에 대한 경력은 회사에서 가장 궁금해 하는 것중에 하나, 될 수 있으면 구체적인 업무와 성과 중심으로 답해라.

- Do you have any particular conditions that you would like the company to take in to consideration?
- What did you like least about your last position?
- What do you work in your company?
- What did you have project in your company?
- What did you learn in your last position?
